What's a fanlisting?
Fanlistings are the brilliant brainstorm of Janine, who decided there should be a way to keep track of all the fans of her favorite show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The list was so successful that she started a couple more, and opened them up for others to create as well. Currently there are fanlistings for everything from actors and actresses and TV shows to couples, cities, fanfic writers and web designers! You don't have a webpage or internet access to join--although the latter does help in finding this site *grin*--this is just a list of any and all fans.
Who is Miranda?
Miranda Fiegelsteen is a character from the late, lamented PAX/NBC series, Mysterious Ways. Miranda (Alisen Down) is a physics grad student at Northern Oregon University--where the main character, Declan Dunn, works as a professor--and one of two friends/sidekicks who help him with his extracurricular investigations into the miraculous. She wore a lot of black, drove a motorcycle, liked to quote Poe, and had a deadpan sense of humor and a quirky personality that made her an instant favorite with fans.
When the series first started, we didn't know much about Miranda, and her mystery was a huge part of what made her such an intriguing character. She also was much more of a supporting role, only appearing for a few short scenes in some episodes, and not at all in others. But the character proved so popular that over the course of Mysterious Ways' two seasons, she became more and more central to the series and we learned a lot more about her. Thanks to Alisen Down's brilliant performance, though, these new revelations boosted rather than detracting from Miranda's appeal.
Eventually we learned that she was the youngest child and only daughter of wealthy, divorced parents, whose intellectual brilliance had alienated her from them because they "came from different worlds" and didn't understand each other. She was almost terminally shy, until Declan hauled her reluctantly out of her shell by barging into her lab and her life and becoming a friend almost before she knew it. This shyness still made it difficult for her to make other, less persistant friends, although by the end of the second season she also counted Peggy and several guest stars in that small but intimate circle.
Why Miranda?
Miranda was a great character, what other reason is there? Between the brilliant writing and Alisen's amazing performance, this relatively minor recurring character became one of the most important and most popular on the series. Miranda was, in some ways, the reason I started watching the later series, NCIS, because the character of Abby Sciuto on that show reminded me of her. She's probably my favorite female TV character of all time, so of course the minute the fanlisting became available, I pounced on it. :-)
